Long Chin Surgery in Korea: Reduction, Advancement or Setback for Your Profile

A long chin and a short chin need opposite operations. A facial contouring surgeon explains how the chin is planned on CT, what recovery looks like, and how long to stay in Seoul.

The short answer

Chin surgery in Korea is bone surgery on the chin, planned on CT: a long or wide chin is reduced, a short or receding chin is brought forward, and a chin that projects too far is set back. It takes place under general anesthesia as part of facial contouring, stitches come out at 10–14 days, and we ask international patients to stay at least 14 days.

  • A long chin and a short chin need opposite operations — reduction or advancement — so the plan starts with your profile, not a trend.
  • The chin bone is moved forward, back, up or down; nerve position and bone thickness are read on CT before the cut is planned.
  • Facial contouring takes 1.5–4 hours under general anesthesia, with one night in the clinic advised and stitches out at 10–14 days.
  • Plan at least 14 days in Seoul. Swelling peaks around days 7–14 and the face starts to look natural at 3–6 months.
  • International patients pay the same surgical fee as Korean patients, with an itemised written quote before you decide.

Hello, I'm Park Sang Wook, a board-certified plastic surgeon working in facial contouring at VERYGOOD Plastic Surgery in Seoul, and a member of the Maxillofacial Contouring Surgery Research Group. Patients who search for a long chin or chin surgery Korea usually send me one side photo with a single question: is my chin too long, too short, or just in the wrong place? That question is the right one, because the answer decides which operation you need.

Most people arrive talking about the nose or the jaw. In my consultations the chin often does more for a profile than the nose does. A chin that ends too early makes the lower face look unfinished; a long chin makes the face look longer and stronger than it is.

This article stays with the chin alone. If your concern is the whole lower face, our team explains every option — cheekbone, jaw angle and chin — on the facial contouring surgery page, with cases filtered by area.

What Korean chin surgery is — three different movements

Korean chin surgery is a genioplasty: the chin bone itself is reshaped or moved. It is not one operation with one result. A chin can be reduced or brought forward, and those are not the same surgery.

Chin shape and the operation it usually points to
What you seeWhat it usually meansOperation we plan
A long chin, or a wide chin that ends flatToo much chin height or width for the rest of the faceChin reduction
A short or receding chin, a weak profileThe chin ends too early or too far backChin advancement
A chin that projects too far forwardThe profile looks long and strong at the frontChin setback
A soft line under the chinOften fat rather than boneLiposuction first, not bone surgery

The last row matters more than people expect. A soft line under the chin is often fat, and if that is the case, double chin liposuction is the first thing I would consider — not bone surgery.

Who chin surgery suits — and who should wait

Chin surgery in Korea is a reasonable answer when the shape you dislike comes from bone. These are the patients I see it help.

  • A short or asymmetric chin that breaks the profile line
  • A long or wide chin that makes the lower face end bluntly
  • A chin that is part of a wider lower-face concern, planned together with the jaw
  • You can stay in Korea two weeks or more for follow-up

And these are the situations where I advise against it, or suggest something else first.

  • The cause is soft tissue rather than bone — we suggest liposuction or a lift first
  • Facial bone growth is not yet complete
  • A schedule too short to stay through the swelling and the follow-up visits
  • An uncontrolled systemic or bleeding disorder

A short or receding chin: chin advancement

A short chin makes the profile look unfinished, and the lower lip and neck can look heavier than they are. Here the chin needs to come forward, not get smaller. Reducing a chin that is already short would make the side view worse.

These are cases from our facial contouring centre team, both photographed 3 months after surgery. The first patient had chin advancement together with liposuction under the chin, because both bone and fat were part of the shape — you can see this chin advancement case from every angle. The second combined chin advancement with cheekbone reduction and jaw reduction.

A long chin: chin reduction

A long chin is one of the most common reasons people ask about genioplasty in Korea. When the chin is long or wide, the lower face ends in a flat line rather than a point. Reducing the chin brings the lower third of the face back into proportion with the rest.

The first two photos are one patient from our team, front and side, who had chin reduction with square jaw reduction and no cheekbone work. You can open the full chin reduction case with the time since surgery. The third patient had chin reduction as part of a three-area contouring plan.

A chin that sits too far forward: chin setback

Less often the chin projects too much and the profile looks long and strong at the front. Setting it back is a different movement again, so it is planned on its own rather than borrowed from a reduction plan.

Surgery day and recovery after chin surgery

Facial contouring takes 1.5–4 hours under general anesthesia, depending on how many areas are treated. We advise one night in the clinic, and you can wash your hair from the day after surgery. Three anesthesiologists work here full time, and one is dedicated to every operation.

Recovery after facial contouring, including chin surgery
WhenWhat usually happens
Day 0Surgery under general anesthesia, one night in the clinic advised
Days 7–14Swelling peaks; the lower face can look wider than before
Days 10–14Stitches come out
Weeks 3–4Most people return to daily life
Months 3–6The face starts to look natural
Month 12Final result

Lower-face swelling is the part people underestimate. The chin you planned shows gradually over months, not days, so judge it at three months rather than three weeks.

Send one front photo and one side photo, and I will tell you whether your chin needs to come forward, get smaller or be left alone.

Chin surgery Korea: your stay, stitches and fee

For chin surgery Korea plans, we ask international patients to stay at least 14 days. That covers the swelling peak, stitch removal at 10–14 days and the follow-up visits before you fly.

  • An interpreter in the room for consultation, the design confirmation on surgery morning and every follow-up visit
  • One coordinator from your first message to your final check
  • Partner hotels near the clinic at partner rates, so you do not cross Seoul the day after surgery
  • Three months of remote follow-up after you fly home, with written replies from your surgeon
  • Your records in English — medical certificate, operation record and post-operative instructions

On cost: there is no foreigner surcharge. International patients pay the same surgical fee as Korean patients, and the quote comes itemised and in writing after consultation, before you decide. What sets the fee is the plan itself — chin alone or chin with jaw, the movement needed, and the time under anesthesia.

What I check first in a chin consultation

Our team works to one principle: bone does not grow back, so we cut less of it. A chin that only needed to come forward does not need to be made smaller as well.

If you are not sure whether the chin is really the area to treat, our facial contouring Korea guide maps cheekbones, jaw and chin side by side. You can read my training and memberships on my surgeon profile.

Risks of chin surgery and how we reduce them

Bone surgery on the face is hard to undo. You should hear the risks from me before you decide, not after.

  • Nerves run through the chin and jaw. Their position is read on CT before the osteotomy is planned, not during surgery.
  • Swelling is heavy and slow. It peaks around days 7–14, and leaving Korea early means missing the follow-up visits.
  • The wrong movement makes the profile worse. Reducing a short chin, or advancing a long one, is why the direction is decided before anything else.
  • Anesthesia is general. One anesthesiologist is dedicated to your operation from start to finish.

Before you book flights, look at the plan for your own face on the facial contouring page, where chin cases sit next to jaw and cheekbone cases. If something looks different once you are home, the three months of remote follow-up exist for that.

Send a side photo with your lips relaxed, and I will tell you whether your chin is a length, width or projection question.

FAQ

Questions patients ask

What is the difference between chin reduction and chin advancement?

Chin reduction makes a long or wide chin smaller so the lower face ends in a softer point. Chin advancement brings a short or receding chin forward so the profile looks finished. They are opposite movements, so the choice depends on your profile, not on the name of the operation.

How long should I stay in Korea for chin surgery?

We ask international patients to stay at least 14 days. Stitches come out at 10–14 days and swelling peaks around days 7–14, so this covers removal and the follow-up visits before your flight.

Is chin surgery in Korea more expensive for foreigners?

No. International patients pay the same surgical fee as Korean patients, with no foreigner surcharge. You receive an itemised written quote after consultation, before you decide.

Can chin surgery be combined with jaw or cheekbone surgery?

Yes. Cheekbone, jaw and chin in one contouring session is a common combination here. Combining lengthens your time under anesthesia and the recovery, so what to combine is decided at consultation.

When can I go back to work after chin surgery?

Most people return to daily life at 3–4 weeks after facial contouring. The face starts to look natural at 3–6 months, and the final result is judged at 12 months.

My chin area looks full. Do I need bone surgery?

Not always. A soft line under the chin is often fat rather than bone, and liposuction is the first thing to consider then. Front and side photos are usually enough for me to tell you which one it is.

This article explains general medical information. Whether surgery suits you, and which method, is decided only after a consultation with the surgeon.
