The short answer
Are you searching for the best double eyelid surgery Korea has to offer, but worried about who will look after your stitches and swelling once you're back home?
- A good double eyelid plan starts from your own lid: skin thickness, fat and how strongly the lid lifts.
- Ask who operates by name, who handles anesthesia, and how the crease height will be chosen.
- If stitches need removing, that usually happens 5 to 7 days after surgery, so plan your stay around it.
- Ask before booking what happens if a question comes up after you fly home.
- A previous eyelid operation changes the plan, so bring whatever records you have.
It's worth reading on before you book or decide anything.

After reading, you'll know what a double eyelid changes, how stitches and incisions differ, which credentials you can check, and how many days to plan in Seoul. That is enough to compare clinics on your own terms.
Hello, I'm Im Young Min, Chief Director and a board-certified plastic surgeon.
At VG Plastic Surgery, an anesthesiologist is dedicated to every operation, so the eyelid surgeon only operates. I trained in internship and residency at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, and I'm a full member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
Many people write to me after seeing a clinic ranking and assuming the top name suits every eyelid. Lids differ in skin thickness, fat and droop.
So the best double eyelid surgery Korea offers is the one whose method fits your lids and whose surgeon you can verify.

Seven questions to put to any clinic, including this one
When you compare options for best double eyelid surgery Korea, a good answer to each is specific and names a person, a measurement or a number of days.
- Who will operate, by name? A clear answer names one surgeon whose training you can look up on the clinic's own doctor pages. Here, every surgeon is board-certified and operates under their own name.
- What will you measure on my lids before choosing a method? Listen for skin thickness, fat, and how far the lid lifts when you look up. A plan chosen before those are checked is a plan chosen from a menu.
- Who gives the anesthesia, and who watches me while I'm asleep or sedated? You want to hear a role, ideally a specialist who isn't also the person operating.
- How will we choose the crease height and shape? Many surgeons simulate the fold with a thin instrument so you can see it in a mirror. Ask to see the height they suggest and how it sits with your brow.
- How many days should I stay in Seoul? The answer should be tied to the method and to stitch removal, not to a package.
- If something worries me after I fly home, who do I message and what do I bring to a local doctor? Ask for the operation details you'd need to show someone at home.
- If the two sides heal differently, when would you judge it, and what would a correction involve? Swelling settles unevenly, so a careful answer includes a waiting period before anyone decides.
Ask it early, because it decides whether a long weekend is realistic at all.
What does a double eyelid actually change?
A double eyelid is a visible crease in the upper lid where the skin folds when the eye opens. Many East Asian people are born with a low, partial or absent crease, and that is ordinary anatomy.
A review of Asian blepharoplasty in Seminars in Plastic Surgery describes the differences: the fat around the lid tends to sit lower and further forward, and the fibres that link the lifting muscle to the skin attach differently, so the skin doesn't fold in the same place.
So “are double eyelids rare?” has a plain answer: it depends on the population, and a single lid is common. Surgery creates or redefines a fold by forming a connection between the skin and the deeper layers. The American Academy of Ophthalmology's EyeWiki describes the two broad routes, sutures alone or an incision, and why the choice follows the anatomy.
The shape matters as much as the existence of a fold. Some people want a crease that tapers toward the inner corner; others want one that runs parallel to the lash line. Neither is more correct. The right one is the one that matches your brow, the width of your lid and what you want people to notice, which is why question four above deserves time.
How do surgeons choose between stitches and an incision?
Three measurements decide most of it: skin thickness, the amount of fat, and lifting strength. Our site states the principle in one line: “We check lid thickness, fat and lifting strength before deciding whether to cut at all.” Thin lids with little fat and a strong lift often suit a suture method; heavier lids usually need an incision.
| What is checked | What it tells the surgeon | How it can change the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Skin thickness | Whether a thread-only fold is likely to hold | Thick skin points toward an incision |
| Fat behind the lid | Whether the lid will look puffy over a new fold | Some fat may be removed through an incision |
| Lifting strength | Whether the lid sits low over the iris | Ptosis correction may be added |
| Excess skin and brow | Whether age has added a hood | Skin removal or a brow approach may fit better |
| Previous surgery | Scar tissue and an old fold line | The plan becomes a revision |
Ptosis is the one that changes the conversation most. The American Academy of Ophthalmology describes it as a drooping upper lid, often from a weak or stretched lifting muscle. If that is present, drawing a crease on top without addressing it can leave the eye looking heavier than before. The longer comparison of incisional and non-incisional double eyelid surgery covers the methods themselves; if you're over 40 and the issue is mostly extra skin, upper blepharoplasty for hooded lids may be the closer match.
Say you're in your late twenties, your lids are fairly thin, and you have a faint fold on one side but not the other. You also have a little extra skin, but your lid doesn't droop. I'd first look at how your lid opens and how much skin and fat sit above the lash line. If the lid is thin and the skin is light, a stitch-based method may be worth discussing. If there's more skin or fat, we'd talk about an incision.
Then I'd ask how long you can stay in Seoul, because the method you choose changes the follow-up you need.
Credentials you can check before you fly
You can confirm three things from home: board certification in plastic surgery, where the surgeon trained, and whether eyelid work is part of their published focus. At VG Plastic Surgery the eye centre team is published by name: me, Hong Dae Won and Yang Jong Phil.
Dr. Hong is a board-certified plastic surgeon from Asan Medical Center, Seoul, and Dr. Yang is a board-certified plastic surgeon from Korea University Hospital. Both are listed as full members of the Eyelid Surgery Research Group of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, and both list membership of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). You can read each profile, and mine at my doctor page, before sending a single message.
Two practical checks help anywhere. Ask that the operating surgeon's name appears on the consent form you sign, and ask whether the surgeon you meet at the consult is the surgeon who operates. Both are reasonable questions, and a clinic should be comfortable answering them.
What decides the cost of double eyelid surgery?
The cost depends on the method first: a stitch-based technique and an incision technique involve different work. The thickness of your skin, the amount of fat and whether the lid droops change how much the surgeon has to do. Anesthesia matters too, as does the number of days you stay in Seoul for stitch removal and checks. If you've had eyelid surgery before, revision work is usually more involved than a first operation. Because these factors differ from person to person, a general figure rarely fits your case.
To get the figure for yours, ask on WhatsApp and attach a photo of your eyes.
How many days in Seoul, and what are the risks?
Plan around stitch removal first.
MedlinePlus also advises keeping activity to a minimum for 3 to 5 days and avoiding strenuous exercise that raises blood pressure for about 3 weeks. A suture-only method may not need removal at all, which is one reason the method and the stay are decided together.
The risks are the same ones any eyelid operation carries. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists swelling and bruising, dry eyes, sensitivity to light, difficulty closing the eyes, infection, bleeding from the incision lines, numbness of the lashes, unfavorable scarring, the possible need for revision surgery, anesthesia risks and, very rarely, a change in vision or blindness. MedlinePlus adds that the lids may not match and healing may be uneven.
In the first weeks a new crease often looks higher and more defined than it will later, because swelling sits in the skin above it. That early look is the main reason to wait before judging symmetry. How quickly any one person settles varies. Your suitability for a given method, and the number of days you need, are confirmed at the in-person exam.
If the stay is what's holding you back, send the dates you could be in Seoul on WhatsApp, with the two eye photos (open and gently closed).

What if you've already had eyelid surgery?
Then you're planning a revision, and that changes the questions. An old fold line, scar tissue under the skin, removed fat or a crease set too high all limit what a second operation can do, so the plan starts from what the first operation left rather than from a fresh design.
Bring whatever you have: the name of the procedure, the date, and any operation note. The common problems and how each is approached are laid out in revision double eyelid surgery, problem by problem. For revisions it is worth asking question seven above twice, once about timing and once about how much scar tissue might limit the result.
One thing to do before you compare clinics
Write your seven questions down and send the same list to every clinic you're considering. The clinic overview for international patients is on our English home page.
If you'd like to start small, send two photos on WhatsApp: your eyes open, looking straight at the camera, and your eyes gently closed, plus the dates you could be in Seoul. If you have an old operation note or a ptosis diagnosis, photograph that too. Then ask one question: which of the seven questions matter most for your lids, and do your dates leave room for stitch removal? One photo is enough to begin, and you can ask before booking anything.
When you come to Seoul, I'll examine your eyes and recommend what fits them.

FAQ
Questions patients ask
Are double eyelids rare among East Asian people?
No. A low, partial or absent upper-lid crease is common in East Asian populations and is normal anatomy. Surgery is a choice about appearance, not a correction of something wrong.
Will Korean double eyelid surgery make my eyes look Western?
It doesn't have to. Crease height and shape are chosen with you, and many people ask for a low or inner-tapering fold that keeps their own eye shape. Ask the surgeon to show you the suggested height in a mirror before you agree to it.
Can I have a non-incision double eyelid if my lid droops?
Often not on its own. If the lid sits low because the lifting muscle is weak, a fold alone can make the eye look heavier, so ptosis correction may be considered alongside it. The exam of lifting strength decides this.
Who handles anesthesia during eyelid surgery at VG Plastic Surgery?
Three board-certified anesthesiologists work on staff, and one is dedicated to every operation. They don't perform the surgery; they monitor blood pressure, pulse and breathing so the surgeon can focus on operating.
What should I bring to a double eyelid consultation in Seoul?
Bring a list of medicines and supplements you take, any diagnosis of dry eye or ptosis, and records from any previous eyelid surgery. If you wear contact lenses, ask beforehand how long to leave them out around surgery.
