Facial Fat Grafting Cost Korea: One Session or Two? Reviews, Methods and Recovery

Facial fat grafting moves your own fat into hollow areas of the face. Its cost follows the number of areas, the harvest site, the sessions and the anesthesia, and it suits lost volume far better than sagging or wide bone.

The short answer

Worried that a facial fat grafting cost Korea figure could double once you're home and someone mentions a second session? That figure mostly follows how many areas are grafted and how much of the fat is likely to stay, so read this before you book a flight.

  • Facial fat grafting suits lost volume, and it does little for sagging skin or wide bone.
  • Cost follows the areas grafted, the harvest site, the number of sessions, the anesthesia and anything combined with it.
  • Only part of a graft stays, so ask whether your estimate assumes one session or two.
  • The forehead, the area between the brows and the temples carry more vascular risk than the cheek, according to a 2022 systematic review.
  • Foreign patients pay the same surgical fee as Korean patients at our clinic, with a written estimate.

By the end you'll know what decides the cost, which review claims hold up, how the methods work and what recovery looks like. That should tell you whether fat suits your face and your budget at all, or whether your money belongs somewhere else.

Hello, I'm Dr. Im Young Min, Chief Director and a board-certified plastic surgeon at VERYGOOD Plastic Surgery in Seoul.

We have eight full-time specialists across plastic surgery, ENT and anesthesiology. Three are anesthesiologists who don't operate, and one is dedicated to each operation. Foreign patients pay the same surgical fee as Korean patients, and the estimate comes in writing.

I wrote this because people often compare the figure for one session and never ask whether fat is the right answer for the hollow they see in the mirror.

Facial fat grafting moves your own fat, usually from the belly or thigh, into areas of the face that have lost volume. It suits hollows, and it's the wrong tool for sagging skin or wide bone.

If you have a figure from another chat already, send one photo of the hollow from the front and ask this on WhatsApp: does this estimate assume one session or two?

What is facial fat grafting, and who is it for?

The operation has two sites. A surgeon takes a small amount of fat with a thin cannula, prepares it, and places it in small deposits under the skin of the face. Because the fat is your own, an allergy to the material isn't the concern it can be with an implant or an injected product. The trade-off is that fat is living tissue, and part of it won't survive in its new place.

The people it tends to suit have a specific kind of change: temples that have sunk, cheeks that flattened after weight loss or with age, a forehead with a dip, or hollows that make the face look tired. You also need enough fat somewhere to harvest and a general health picture that allows surgery.

I've written separately about which areas of the face can be grafted and how many days to plan in Seoul, so this post stays on the decision and what it costs you.

A note on the searches that sit next to this one. A Korean facial, a glass skin facial or an aqua peel is a skin treatment at a spa or skin clinic, with no surgery involved. We're a surgical clinic, and those aren't on our menu.

When wouldn't I recommend fat grafting?

The first thing I'd want to know is whether your face has lost volume or moved. Press gently upward on your cheek in the mirror. If the fold beside your mouth softens and the face looks like yours again, tissue has probably descended, and adding fat would make a heavier version of the same problem.

That's when a lift enters the conversation. A mini facelift, with its shorter incision, is one option for early jawline laxity, and it leaves a scar and a small risk of nerve injury to weigh. If you've read about a full 9D facelift and the flight home, you'll know the recovery is a larger commitment too.

The second case is bone. If your face looks wide or uneven in photos because of the cheekbone or jaw, volume won't correct that, and facial contouring is the discussion to have, along with its nerve and bone risks. Asymmetry can come from either layer, which is why the cost of correcting it can't be estimated until someone knows which one it is.

I'd also slow down if you're very lean with little to harvest, if you plan to lose or gain a lot of weight soon, or if you've had filler in the same area and don't know what's still there.

Methods: how the fat gets from belly to cheek

Most facial fat grafting follows three steps: harvest, purify, then inject in layers. Harvest is a small liposuction. Purifying separates usable fat from fluid and oil, commonly by centrifuge, filtration or settling, and surgeons still debate which is superior.

Injection is where the craft sits. Fat needs a blood supply to survive, so it's placed in many small threads across several depths. A large single deposit is more likely to die off or form a lump. Our site puts it this way: what counts isn't how much went in, but how much of it stayed.

That's why more fat doesn't mean more result. Overfilling a hollow to allow for loss can leave an area looking heavy if more of it survives than expected.

Facial fat grafting cost Korea: what decides your figure

In short, these are the factors that move a facial fat grafting cost Korea estimate. I publish no figure here, because a number without your face attached wouldn't tell you much.

FactorWhy it moves the cost
Areas graftedOne temple hollow and a full-face plan are different operations
Harvest siteA lean frame can make harvesting harder or need a different site
SessionsA planned second session may add a trip, a fee or both
AnesthesiaAsk which type is planned and whether it's in the estimate
Combined surgeryAdding a lift or contouring changes operating time and your stay

Days in Seoul sit outside the surgical fee but still belong in your spreadsheet, as do flights, a hotel and any follow-up back home. People who've had a lift that didn't hold face a similar question, which I cover in what you're paying for with a deep plane facelift.

When you compare estimates, line them up on the same points: which areas, which harvest site, whether anesthesia is included and what a second session would involve. A lower figure for one session can be a different plan.

To get a figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost, with a photo of the area you'd like to change. You can see our surgeons and centers on the VERYGOOD Plastic Surgery English home page first if you'd like to check who you're writing to.

Say you're 38 and your temples have sunk

Say you've lost weight, your temples and upper cheeks look hollow, your jawline still holds, and you have one trip's worth of leave. I'd reason this way. Volume is the actual problem, so fat is a fair question to ask about. The cheek is a lower-risk zone than the temple, so I'd want to discuss whether both need doing. And since a second session is a real possibility, I'd want you to budget for that from the start, in both money and time off.

What do reviews get right about fat grafting?

Three claims turn up again and again in review threads and forums.

"Most of the fat melts away." Partly true. A 2018 meta-analysis in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery found about 50% to 60% of the injected volume retained at one year, with an average of 1.5 sessions to reach the desired result. It covered reconstructive patients and excluded cosmetic cases, so treat it as a rough guide. Fat that survives the first months generally behaves like the rest of your fat.

"A second session is just an upsell." Not necessarily. Since loss is expected, a second session can be a sound plan. What you can reasonably ask is whether it's included, when it would happen and how anyone would decide it's needed.

"It's your own fat, so it's safe." This one is false. Your own tissue removes the allergy question and leaves the vascular risk, which I come to below. The fat also changes with your weight, so a large weight gain or loss can alter the result.

How long does recovery take, and when can you judge the result?

Expect swelling and bruising in two places, your face and the harvest site. Facial swelling usually looks worse before it looks better, and a 2022 systematic review in the Journal of Clinical Medicine considered swelling lasting up to about two to three weeks to be within normal limits. People heal at different speeds, so ask for your own timeline when you plan your leave.

The harder part is patience. Your face in week two is still mostly swelling, and volume keeps shifting for months. The same 2018 review saw retention settle at around a year in the congenital patients it followed, so an early verdict, good or bad, tends to mislead. I'd also hold off on judging whether you need a second session until the swelling has gone.

Risks and side effects to know

Common temporary reactions are swelling, bruising, tenderness and numbness at the harvest site, usually easing over days to weeks. Less often, people see lumps, unevenness, cysts, acne flare-ups or a graft that grows with weight. The harvest site has its own liposuction risks, which the American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists as including contour irregularities, numbness and infection.

The rare and serious risk is fat entering a blood vessel, which has been reported to cause vision loss or stroke. The 2022 review concluded that the true complication rate is unknown because reporting is poor, and it found the area between the brows and multi-site injections carried the highest vascular risk, followed by the forehead and temple, with the cheek the lowest. Ask any surgeon how they approach those zones.

In general, you should wait or skip it if you have an infection or inflammation in the area, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a bleeding tendency or take blood thinners, or have a health condition that makes anesthesia unsafe. Tell the surgeon about any recent filler, and about plans for major weight change.

If something changes after you fly home, contact your treating clinic with photos and see a local doctor for redness, fever or a growing lump. Sudden vision change, severe pain, or weakness or trouble speaking is an emergency, so go to the nearest emergency department at once. Before you travel, the US CDC advises arranging follow-up care with your local provider, and it notes that flying after surgery raises the risk of blood clots.

If you've had filler before, include the product type and rough date with your message, if you know them, and ask which zones of your face you'd be treating.

Who will you contact once you're home?

Put simply, this belongs in your plan before the deposit. Find out who you message if a lump appears at week six, and ask a doctor at home whether they're willing to see you after surgery abroad. A second session makes this more pressing, since it means deciding, from another country, whether to come back.

I see plastic surgery as a form of self-care, and its purpose is a happier life. A plan that leaves you anxious on day ten, thousands of miles away, doesn't serve that, however good the figure looked.

Your next step is small. One photo of the area in daylight is enough to start, plus your likely travel month, and the photo quote asks for no card details. Send them on WhatsApp and ask what your plan would cost with one session and with two. When you come to Seoul, the surgeon examines your face in person and recommends the operation that fits, or tells you plainly if none does.

FAQ

Questions patients ask

Do foreigners pay more than Korean patients for facial fat grafting here?

No. Foreign patients pay the same surgical fee as Korean patients at our clinic, and the estimate is given in writing.

Why can't you publish one facial fat grafting cost Korea figure?

The fee changes with the areas grafted, the harvest site, the sessions, the anesthesia and anything combined with it. Prices also date quickly, so ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case.

How long does facial fat last?

Fat that survives the first months generally stays and changes with your body weight. One review of reconstructive patients found about 50% to 60% of the volume retained at one year, and cosmetic results can differ.

Should I choose fat or filler for hollow temples?

Fat involves surgery and a harvest site, and part of it is lost. Filler avoids a harvest but wears off over time, and it carries its own vascular risk. Your anatomy and how long you want the change to last usually decide it.

Can I combine fat grafting with a facelift on one trip?

Often that's possible, since descended tissue and lost volume can appear together. A combined plan changes operating time, recovery and cost, so raise it when you ask for your estimate. The final plan is set after an in-person exam.
