The short answer
Are you worried that a short trip won't be enough for v line jaw surgery Korea?
- Plan v line jaw surgery korea around the first two weeks, when bleeding, swelling and early infection are most likely to appear.
- “V-line” can mean the jaw angle only, the angle plus the long curve, or both plus chin narrowing, and each step adds swelling and days.
- In a 588-patient Korean review, chin and lower-lip numbness affected 6.46% of patients, and 1.53% still had it at one year.
- A return flight closer to day 14 leaves room for a check-up after the compression dressing period.

By the end you will know what the cost depends on, what review threads claim compared with what is medically true, how the methods differ, and how many days to plan in Seoul.
Hello, I'm Dr. Im Young Min, Chief Director and a board-certified plastic surgeon.
At VG Plastic Surgery I bring a Ph.D. in Medicine and training at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. My colleague Dr. Park Sang Wook is a member of the Maxillofacial Contouring Surgery Research Group, which matters for jaw work.
Many people treat V-line as a quick procedure and book a long weekend, but it is bone surgery under general anaesthesia, and the recovery sets the schedule.
The short answer: build the trip around the first two weeks, when bleeding, swelling and early infection are most likely to appear. A return flight on day five is the part of the plan to rethink first.

Which of the three jaw plans are you actually asking about?
V-line jaw surgery usually means one of three bone plans: the jaw angle alone, the angle plus the long curve of the lower border, or both of those plus narrowing the chin. Each step adds bone work, and each adds swelling and days to the trip. “Mini V-line” has no fixed definition, so ask which bones it includes.
| Plan | Bone that changes | What it tends to add to the trip |
|---|---|---|
| Angle reduction | The back corner of the jaw | Swelling mostly at the sides of the face |
| Angle plus long curve | The lower border from the angle toward the chin | A longer line of bone, swelling along the whole jawline |
| Full V-line | The border plus a cut through the chin, fixed with a small plate | Chin and lower-lip numbness becomes the main thing to track |
The plan follows where your width sits. Wide corners seen from the front point toward the angle; a heavy, straight lower border points toward the long curve; a broad or long chin brings chin narrowing into the plan. How surgeons choose between angle and long-curve reduction is laid out in square jaw surgery in Korea, and shaping jaw and chin together is covered in V-line surgery as one line from ear to chin.
If your cheekbones are part of the question too, cheekbone, jaw or chin sorts out which area is driving the width.
One check matters before any of this. When much of the width is masseter muscle, cutting bone changes less than people expect. At this clinic, nerves and bone thickness are mapped on CT before contouring is planned, and that scan is also what shows how much bone lies outside the nerve canal.
What happens in the first 48 hours?
The first two days are about bleeding, swelling and breathing. In the 588-patient Korean review, every patient was admitted for one to two days, and a bulky compression dressing went on for four to five days. Your face usually looks wider at this point, which surprises people who expected to see the new line straight away.
A 2017 case report in the Annals of Medicine and Surgery shows why the first night gets attention. After a mandibular osteotomy done as office-based day surgery, a patient's bleeding and swelling narrowed the airway about ten hours later, and an emergency operation in hospital followed. Events like this are uncommon, but they explain a question worth asking any clinic: where will I sleep the first night, and who is watching?
Before surgery, an anesthesiologist on staff assesses underlying conditions. That is the moment to mention blood thinners, supplements, snoring or sleep apnoea, and any reaction you've had to anaesthesia before. The clinic's English site lists an interpreter as included for consultations, so this conversation does not have to happen in a language you only half follow.
Expect pressure, tightness and a jaw that opens less than usual. The incisions for these plans are generally inside the mouth, so the first days run on liquids and very soft food, careful rinsing and sleeping with your head raised.
Day 3 to day 14: the stretch that decides your flight
Days three to fourteen are when the dressing comes off, the mouth incisions heal and early infection, if it happens, usually shows. In the Korean review, 19 of 588 patients (3.23%) developed an infection within two weeks; 17 of those settled with intravenous antibiotics over one to two weeks.
| Days | What is usually happening | Trip note |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 | Close watch after surgery, compression dressing on | Stay near the clinic |
| 3–5 | Swelling near its height, dressing often still on | Hotel, soft food, short walks |
| 11–14 | Most early infections in the review had appeared by now | A flight home starts to make sense if the check-up is clear |
What you do in this stretch matters as much as what happens in the clinic. Keep food soft, keep the mouth clean after every meal, skip alcohol and smoking, and avoid saunas, heavy exercise and anything that presses on the jaw. Swelling that grows after it had been settling, fever, a bad taste or discharge in the mouth, or a jaw that opens less each day are reasons to call the clinic the same day.
The wider sequence for a surgery trip, from sending the first photo to boarding the flight home, is in plastic surgery in Korea for foreigners.
If your leave is the fixed limit, start with that number. Send on WhatsApp how many days you can be away and the earliest date you could land, with a front and side photo of your jaw. You'll hear back in English about how a consultation, the surgery day and the first check-ups line up inside those days.

Can I fly home on day 7?
Some people do, but day seven falls inside the window when early infections were still appearing in the published review, and a long-haul flight means many hours sitting still with a swollen face.
The CDC's medical tourism guidance makes two points that apply directly: flying soon after surgery raises the risk of blood clots, and follow-up care at home should be arranged before you leave. From Los Angeles or Toronto the flight is well over ten hours. Walk the aisle, drink water and keep the compression garment on if you have been told to wear one.
Adding eyelids to the same trip is a common idea, and those operations run on their own clock: see double eyelid surgery recovery and stay and eye bag surgery recovery day by day. Combining operations is a consultation question, and it rarely makes the trip shorter.
Say you are 29, you have a square lower face and a strong jaw angle in the side view, and your employer has given you ten days off. I would first look at which of the three plans fits your bone, then count backwards from your return date. The compression dressing and the first check-ups take up the early days, and the period from day 3 to 14 is when swelling and any early infection tend to show.
A flight on day seven would then be a question to settle with an examination, not an assumption. With ten days, you might stay in Seoul for most of them. If you could only get five days, we would talk about a smaller plan or a later date instead of squeezing the trip.
What decides the cost of v line jaw surgery in Korea?
The cost depends on a few things that differ from person to person. The first is the method: a mini V-line, a full V-line and a plan that includes the chin are different operations. The second is how much bone has to be reshaped, which depends on your jaw angle and the width of your face. Third is the anaesthesia and the length of the operation, since this is done under general anaesthesia.
Fourth is how many days you can stay in Seoul, because the first check-ups and the dressing removal need to fit your schedule. Follow-up after you fly home also plays a part. To get the figure for your own case, send your photos on WhatsApp and ask for it there.
Numbness, infection and the rarer risks
Numbness of the chin, lower lip and inside of the mouth is the most common problem after jaw contouring. In the 588-case review it affected 38 patients (6.46%), and 9 (1.53%) still had it at one year. The inferior alveolar nerve runs inside the lower jaw, which is why its path is checked before bone is cut.
The same 588-case review counted, across all periods, an infection rate of 5.95%, one patient who needed a transfusion during surgery, one hemifacial palsy that recovered completely after six months, and eight patients (1.36%) who later asked to have the chin plate and screws removed.
Other problems appear in the surgical literature without a single reliable number: uneven sides, soft tissue that looks looser once bone is gone, and a change smaller than the patient hoped for. Faces with thin soft tissue, and older patients, are usually planned more conservatively for that reason.
Some people should wait or reconsider:
- anyone whose face is still growing, or who is pregnant
- people who cannot stop smoking around surgery, given the infection risk with mouth incisions
- anyone with a bleeding disorder, or on blood thinners that can't safely be paused
- people whose width is mostly muscle, where bone surgery changes less than expected
- anyone whose trip cannot stretch past the first week
Recovery and results differ from person to person, and whether the operation suits you is decided at the in-person consultation after the CT.
What changes in weeks 3 to 12, once you're home?
Back home, the jaw keeps changing for months. Swelling eases gradually, and numbness that hasn't gone by the end of the trip often keeps improving; the review's discussion puts typical recovery of this kind of sensory change at six to twelve months. Judge the shape at three months or later, and ignore the week-three selfie.
Before you fly, collect the operation summary, the list of medicines you were given and the clinic's contact details, and find a doctor at home you could see if needed. If swelling returns after it had gone, or fever or discharge appears, see a doctor locally first and then tell the clinic what was found. Average follow-up in the Korean review was 14 weeks, a fair reminder that this operation is judged over a season.
What to put in your first WhatsApp message
Send three photos on WhatsApp: front, side and a 45-degree view in daylight, with your hair back and your teeth together. Add the dates you could be in Seoul, and ask one question: what is the earliest day I could safely fly home with my jaw? One photo is enough to start, and you can ask before you book anything. If you decide to come, I will examine you in person and recommend what fits your jaw and your schedule.
The clinic is at 635 Nonhyeon-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. You'll get a reply in English, and the dates you send are what the consultation and surgery days get fitted around.

FAQ
Questions patients ask
Is mini V-line surgery a shorter recovery than full V-line?
Often, because fewer bone steps usually mean less swelling and less numbness to wait out. “Mini V-line” has no fixed definition, though, so ask which bones it includes: angle only, part of the lower border, or the chin. The trip length follows the bone plan, not the label.
How long does swelling last after V-line jaw surgery?
The heaviest swelling usually sits in the first week, near its height around days three to five while the compression dressing is still on. It then eases gradually over the following weeks, and the final line is judged after several months. Residual numbness can take longer, typically six to twelve months to settle when it recovers.
Will the scars show after V-line jaw surgery in Korea?
For angle, long-curve and chin reduction, incisions are generally made inside the mouth, so there is usually no scar on the face. That is also why mouth hygiene and soft food matter so much in the first two weeks: the wound sits where you eat.
Can I go back to an office job two weeks after surgery?
Many people with desk jobs plan around two weeks, but swelling is usually still visible then and the jaw may feel stiff when talking for long. Numbness of the chin or lower lip can make speech feel odd for a while. If your job means presenting or video calls, leave extra days before returning.
Does the chin plate have to come out later?
Usually it stays in. In a review of 588 Korean jaw-contouring patients, eight (1.36%) later asked to have the plate and screws from sliding genioplasty removed. Removal is a separate, smaller operation, so it is worth asking about before surgery.
Is there an interpreter during the consultation in Seoul?
The clinic's English site lists an interpreter as included for consultations. That covers the conversation with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist, which is where you should raise medicines, sleep apnoea and your flight date.
